The Particles: Embrace

Mini Collection 5

This collection was created for the Rosewood Hotel’s annual calendar, where each artwork needed to reflect the essence of the hotel while also representing the uniqueness of each month. Being selected for this project was an unexpected yet exciting challenge, as I was one of the featured artists alongside another local talent.

Despite each of the six artworks being distinct in theme, they are all unified through my Particles style, maintaining a cohesive visual narrative. Each piece conveys its own hidden messages—some subtly woven into the details, while others are more pronounced.

Additionally, this collection introduced a new challenge to my creative process: the integration of physical gold leaf. Applied by hand onto the digital prints, this element enhances the artwork, creating a unique highlight that interacts dynamically with different lighting and environments.

Artwork 1: Embrace

The main event this month is celebrating love in all its forms on Valentine’s Day. I chose to draw the front section of the Vattanac Tower, as its half-circle shape symbolizes embracing hands, evoking feelings of care and love. Additionally, the building is an ideal spot for a romantic date or a cozy family dinner on Valentine’s Day.

Artwork 2: Monumental

This month marks the biggest celebration and national holiday in Cambodia, Khmer New Year. For this occasion, I chose to draw a combination of two iconic buildings visible from the 35th floor of the Rosewood Gallery: Wat Phnom and Techo National Stadium.

Wat Phnom serves as the heart of Phnom Penh, a place where people gather to celebrate and pray during major events, especially Khmer New Year. On the other hand, the Techo Stadium, one of the city's newest landmarks, stands as a symbol of pride for all Cambodians, especially after hosting the 2023 SEA Games. This combination of classic and modern architecture perfectly represents the fusion of tradition and progress in Cambodia.

Artwork 3: Aesthetic

June is a time of year that celebrates fashion. To represent this, I’ve selected a statue from the Angkor National Museum as my reference image. Rosewood Phnom Penh is renowned for hosting various fashion-related events, from designer gatherings to fashion week. This statue highlights how fashion has always been integral to our tradition, making it a fitting reflection of the connection between our historical heritage and the modern events happening at Rosewood.

Artwork 4: Awaken

This month marks the holiday season in Western countries and holds special significance for me as an artist, as it will be the month of my solo exhibition at Rosewood Gallery. For my drawing, I’ve chosen a statue of the Khmer dragon, which symbolizes ancestors and acts as a guardian of Buddhism. This dragon can be seen at the entrance of most temples and pagodas in Cambodia, making it a notable site for both locals and visitors during the holidays. Additionally, the Khmer dragon serves as the main inspiration behind the design of the Rosewood Phnom Penh building.

Artwork 5: Honor

This month features both Halloween and the Phcum Ben festival in Cambodia. For my drawing, I’ve selected the Hanuman Statue at the entrance of Rosewood Hotel Phnom Penh. Hanuman, a revered figure in history as a devoted follower of the monkey king, symbolizes strength and devotion. To celebrate Halloween, I'll incorporate festive makeup onto the monkey face, blending the traditional with a touch of Halloween spirit.

Artwork 6: Harmony

Christmas is celebrated worldwide as a major festive occasion. Although most Cambodians practice Buddhism, December generally brings a festive atmosphere, with pleasant weather and the anticipation of the New Year.

I chose to draw a section of the shading device on the Rosewood Phnom Penh building. As an architect, I appreciate the vital role shading devices play in keeping a building cool and comfortable, while also enhancing its appearance. These shading devices remind me of Christmas tree leaves and pinecone scales, evoking a cozy, inviting vibe. They contribute to the building's warm ambiance, creating a calm and festive holiday mood.
