Capturing the delicate picking of a flower, this piece represents reaping rewards at the end of a long journey. But along the way, we have evolved, moving away from an appreciation of earth’s bounty to being in awe of our species’ technological prowess. This change in perspective is reflected in the blending of modern patterns and violet hues across the hand in place of the earthlier tones and designs in the piece, “Planting”, that started this journey by planting a seed into earth’s fertile soil. This piece asks us: How does natural beauty, ancient tradition, human innovation, and contemporary technology alter which forms of beauty and fulfillment that we value?

On the surface, the use of murky, almost putrid like colors embodies the formidable presence of evil. The calm green and blue hues capture the god’s seemingly good-natured cooperation with the demons to find the elixir of immortality. In juxtaposition, the warm oranges and reds emit embers of his unseen trial: to save the gods from extinction.

A contemporary reinterpretation of an incomplete Buddha effigy from the Angkor National Museum’s celebrated ‘Room of a Thousand Buddhas,’ this piece transforms the perceived ‘missing’ element into a powerful statement of continual emergence. By using a consistent color palette but contrasting particle designs between the missing pieces and present elements, this work urges the audience to look beyond absence and instead witness a vibrant process of cohesion. It conveys an optimistic philosophy: that challenges or perceived incompleteness are merely moments in a grander narrative of growth, mirroring the uneven journey to Enlightenment in Buddhism and Cambodia’s reclamation
and revitalization of its cultural heritage.

This captivating artwork reimagines King Jayavarman VII, a revered figure from Cambodian history, whose statue is presently housed at the National Museum of Cambodia in Phnom Penh. The piece uses vibrant hues to embody his monumental accomplishments and his legacy as a compassionate ruler focused on the wellbeing of the Khmer people, culture, and religion. Hidden in the details are three everyday representations of his iconic achievements in health, agriculture, and religion. This piece respects the monumentalness of King Jayavarman VII and unearths the often unknown tales about his care and concern for the everyday life of his citizens. This illustration presents a serene Buddha, whose gentle smile is laced with darker hues and invasive patterns that hint at a struggle. This deliberate yet subtle visual contrast serves as a profound meditation on inner stillness amidst external hardship. Referencing the iconic bust of the Buddha on Naga from late 12th-century Angkor Wat that tells the story of when the Buddha remained unperturbed despite evil forces trying to unmoor him from his journey, the piece invites the viewer to look beyond the surface of the enlightened Budda to see the daunting challenges that he – and all of us – must face underneath the guise of tranquility.

He reimagines the statue’s missing pieces as flying to rejoin its body, showing the power of our collective imagination and efforts to make whole what may seem lost.
