This compelling artwork presents a serene Buddha, whose gentle smile is laced with darker hues and invasive patterns that hint at a struggle. This deliberate yet subtle visual contrast serves as a profound meditation on inner stillness amidst external hardship. Referencing the iconic bust of the Buddha on Naga from late 12th-century Angkor Wat that tells the story of when the Buddha remained unperturbed despite evil forces trying to unmoor him from his journey, the piece invites the viewer to look beyond the surface of the enlightened Budda to see the daunting challenges that he–and all of us–must face underneath the guise of tranquility.
